Setan Jawa is a silent black and white film by director Garin Nugroho accompanied by a live gamelan orchestra led by composer Rahayu Supanggah. It draws on influences from German Expressionist cinema, Indonesian puppet theatre and Javanese mysticism to tell a story of poverty, love and a deal with the devil.
